What is a LEED AP
The United States Green Building Council (USGBC) created guidelines for green building called Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. LEED® designations, also known as credentials, were developed for professional builders to be certified to work in the green, sustainable building field.
The organization that awards LEED® designations is the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI). LEED® credentials include LEED® Green Associate, LEED® AP, and LEED® Fellow. Green building professionals who want LEED® credentials must study materials and pass different exams.
Building professionals who have a LEED® AP credential indicates a basic knowledge of green construction, operations, and building design. To continue in the LEED® credential program, there are various LEED® AP designations available for different specialty studies, or tracks. Professionals can take exams in specialty area if desired.
Credentialing System:
The U.S. Green Building Council’s (LEED®), credentialing system has been evolving in an effort to keep current with trends and technologies in the green building arena. With rigorous testing in specialized areas the client can be assured a more educated and aware professional will be there throughout the building process.
The new (LEED®), exams are geared to the building professional’s area of specialization as well as the extensiveness of their skill in green building design. The (LEED®), AP Homes designation is one that lets you know the expert is uniquely qualified in the design and construction of high-performance green homes that use less energy, water, and natural resources; create less waste; and are more healthful and comfortable.
Under the new exam system, candidates taking the homes exam will be required to first pass the (LEED®), AP testing process to become a qualified “accredited professional” which proves general knowledge of green building principles. Additionally, in order to be considered for the exams, building professionals must have documentation of having worked on a (LEED®) certified project prior to the AP exam.
Having a qualified (LEED®) AP specialist helping the client build a home or commercial project is always reassuring, and knowing that the AP has earned the credential proving their knowledge about green building gives you confidence in that person going forward.
In order for your project to earn (LEED®) certification, it must earn a certain amount of points on the USGBC’s checklist. Utilizing the (LEED®) professional knowledge, skills, and experience will help your project comply with the (LEED®) program and point system. The AP professional will assure your project is environmentally friendly, meets your budget, saves energy and is a healthy place to live or work.
